“The Sundara Yoga Therapy Trauma-Informed Yoga Intensive went beyond my expectations going in. Being a 5 year veteran of teaching to at-risk youth and adult populations, I was unsure how much this training could offer me. I was so impressed with the abundant amount of information presented and the ever-evolving approach Genevieve takes with this material. Genevieve brings a jaw-dropping amount of experience and knowledge to the table. Furthermore, she brings this level of availability, generosity and approachability I rarely see in this type of training experience. Well worth it!!”

The training includes evidence informed yoga therapy methodology and protocols for working with clients who suffer from a wide array of anxiety disorders. These protocols are currently taught in Yoga studios, hospitals, wellness centers and other healthcare facilities, prisons, and addiction recovery centers, both as stand-alone programs and as a complementary modality in an integrative healthcare setting. We offer practical information about teaching in a wide variety of settings, as well as the many business aspects that help students market their new skills and find teaching jobs in similar facilities.
Yoga Therapy is an integrated approach to health and wellness; it is widely recognized and accepted within the most up-to-date medical and mental health communities. Yoga Therapy brings the ancient insights of yoga into modern wellness programs, utilizes modern scientific, medical and mental health knowledge, in addition to ancient practices of self-healing. Through an Ayurvedic lens, we see each client as an individual with a unique constitution; from this view we employ a variety of techniques and tools to address the multitude of an individual’s needs. The practices slowly bring clients into a balanced and harmonious existence, mind, body and spirit. The methods we employ are not only rooted in the ancient techniques of Yoga but also in modern research in the fields of neurobiology, stress physiology and medical biophysics. We explore the plethora of modern research devoted to the relationship between Yoga and the mind, and its role in treating trauma and stress related illness. The Polyvagal Nerve theory and Somathesis, and their application in treating acute stress, trauma and anxiety, provides us with the knowledge and skills to amplify a human’s innate ability to self-soothe, self-heal and eventually revive a natural self-regulation system, all through the practice of evidence informed yoga therapy protocols. More often than not, yoga training programs avoid the topic of spirituality. Our distinguished faculty member, Dr. Henry Rosemont, Jr. helps us develop an understanding of the importance and relevance of spirituality and offers guidance into how to implement spirituality into the therapeutic model without religious affiliation. Our licensed psychotherapy faculty members will address some of the more complex psychological aspects to give training participants a deeper understanding of trauma, anxiety and stress disorders. We teach participants self-care techniques and methods to stay emotionally safe when working with this complex and potentially emotionally taxing population.
The two hallmarks of the program are the faculty and the guest speakers, all of whom give firsthand information about the reality of working with special populations in a variety of settings (prison, cancer centers, addiction rehabilitation centers, inpatient psychiatric wards, shelters, etc) based on solid experience. The reality of working with these populations is often much different than the textbook theory information that is based solely on averages and clinical data dervied from a single population source. What works well in an addiction rehabilitation center does not necessarily work in oncology center. We practice Yoga Therapy and work in the trenches with the special populations we prepare our students to work with.
The training includes didactic and experiential lessons and group discussions in the following areas: yoga psychology and philosophy, ancient yoga techniques (asana, pranayama, pratyahara, dharana, dhyana, svadyaya, aparigraha, and Yoga Nidra), Yoga Therapy protocols (working within the Koshic model), Ayurveda, behavioral therapy, spirituality, western perspectives (musculoskeletal, biochemical systems, neurophysiology), acupressure, acupuncture, sound therapy, aromatherapy and nutrition. These are all important factors that address the complex issues that present with anxiety disorders. Important business topics such as assessment forms, privacy, documents, registration, marketing, networking, and current, ongoing research is covered within the program.
The training also readies participants to offer an Overcoming Anxiety Clinic modeled after Sundara Yoga Therapy’s very successful program that has been offered quarterly in Austin since 2009. Click HERE to see Overcome Anxiety:A Holistic & Natural Approach Clinic. Upon completion of the training, students will be certified facilitators of the Overcoming Anxiety Clinic and will have full access to all the materials used in the clinic including marketing material. No additional fees will ever be required in the future to offer clinics.

“This training is an intensive training; the training is not intended to be a healing retreat for the participants. Trauma work typically attracts people who have experienced trauma in their own lives and who have used Yoga as part of their healing journey. That is the case with all the faculty, so fully expected; however, we must take precautions to make sure that applicants are far enough along in their own journey to participate in the training as students, and not use the training (intentionally or unintentionally) as part of their own healing journey. This requirement is intended to protect all of the participants. We make the assumption that everyone who is signing up (to learn how to work with individuals who have unresolved trauma) have come far enough in their own self-healing journey – that they are grounded, centered and have the ability to self-regulate. We do our best to screen all applicants, but we ask you to be your own best judge – where are you on your own journey? We offer the TIYT training several times a year, if there is any question about your ability to self-regulate and participate fully as a student, then please consider a training at a later date. Thank you for understanding.”
