What to wear:

Soft, comfortable clothing that is non restrictive is best. Some people prefer loose fitting, sweat suit type of clothing, while others prefer the form fitting yoga pants and tanks. Wear whatever you will be the most comfortable moving in and stretching your body. Our community is very down to earth, and there is very little emphasis, if any, on what you wear or look like. Sundara practitioners come in all shapes, sizes and ages-there is no judgement or pressure to conform. It is a beautiful thing!

What to Bring:

1. Bring a yoga mat, we recommend 1/4" but some people prefer the thinner 1/8" mats. We sell high quality 1/4" mats at Sundara for a very competitive price ($16.95 + tax-less expensive than most thin mats).
2. Bring a water bottle if you are practicing in the morning or if you plan to attend a physically demanding class. Hydration is very important for muscle wellness. We all wake up semi-dehydrated, so it is important to hydrate before your morning practice. Replenishing lost fluids during a vigorous class is equally important. As you become more experienced, and perhaps explore advanced postures, you will need to limit your water intake before inversions, forward bends and arm balances; however, hydration should remain the top priority. If you bring a water bottle, it is best to leave it against the wall and not near your mat or between mats. It is perfectly acceptable to stop your activity to get a drink, but you may want to wait until there is movement, so you do not disturb anyone that is in a quiet moment.
3. Bring a handkerchief or cloth to layer over your eyes when we put an eyebag over your eyes during final relaxation pose (Savasana). We provide the eyebags. Tissues are available at the studio, but we are committed to reducing waste, so bringing something that is reusable from home is very helpful to us and the environment. Our eyebags are filled with flax seed and lavender buds. If you are sensitive to lavendar, you should not use our eyebags. You may bring your own from home, or just lay a cloth over your eyes. It is very comforting to have the eyes covered when trying to relax.
4. If you are taking a Gentle or Restorative class, you may want to consider bringing socks to put on your feet in restorative postures and the final relaxation pose; it is easier to relax when you are warm. Please note that it is a good idea to remove the socks during standing poses-you will have better traction.


When you arrive:

It is customary to remove your shoes when you enter a yoga studio. We provide shoe cubbies in our entry where you may leave your bag, shoes, and clothing, anything you like. If a staff member isn't at the desk, the front door will be locked, so your belongings are secure. We cannot be held responsible for lost or stolen items, so if you prefer, you can bring your belongings into the studio with you. Please note that we have NEVER had a theft incident. If you bring your items in with you, please place them against a wall near your mat. Please be certain to turn off your cell phone (please don't set it to vibrate, as that creates a disturbance for other practitioners)-more on that below in "cell phone etiquette."
We have a brief medical form and a liability waiver release form for you to fill out on your first visit, so it is a good idea to plan to arrive 5-10 minutes early. The information from the medical form is kept confidential, and is kept in a locked file/room. The information will be passed on to the teacher if there are issues that may require the teacher’s attention during the class. If you would like to speak with the teacher directly, there are always a few minutes before class. Although it is ultimately everyone's responsibility to keep them safe, it is a good idea to inform a teacher of a potential risk.


Rest rooms:

It is always perfectly acceptable to get up in the middle of class to use the rest room. You do not need to indicate the necessity to your teacher. It is courteous to try to use the restroom before or after the final relaxation pose, so you don't disturb others, but do what you have to do :) The restrooms are located at the end of the hall.


Cell Phone Etiquette:

Please respect your fellow yoga practitioners and the teachers and turn your cell phone off when you enter the studio. If you leave your bag out in the lobby, please double check to make sure your cell phone turned off while you are practicing. If you need to be "on-call" please leave the studio number (512) 249-9201 with the person that will be contacting you. The person at the front desk will come in to get you if you receive an emergency call. Please let the staff member at the front desk know that you may be receiving a call. If a staff member is not at the front desk, the front door will be locked and you may bring your cell phone in and leave it on vibrate if you absolutely cannot turn it off for 75 minutes. Please let the teacher know that you have your phone on vibrate and that it is in the room. If you receive a call, please take your phone out into the lobby area before you begin to speak.

Listening to your body during practice:

It is very important to keep yourself safe. It is your responsibility to pull out of a posture that does not feel right for your body. Our teachers are highly trained, and they do their best to keep everyone safe, but teachers cannot know everything that is going on in your body, nor can they feel what you feel. Pain is an indicator that you have gone too far. Please honor your body and pull out of anything that takes you out of the pain-free range of motion. If you need a rest, you may stop whatever pose is active and rest. You are your own best teacher, heed your body's warnings, and stop. The purpose of Yoga is to nourish and nurture; take care of you.

Beginner's Classes:

Periodically we run 4 or 6 week beginner's series. But there is no need to wait for a series. We offer "Mixed Level Hatha Yoga" classes which are beginner friendly. A lot of instruction is given during class and modification are offered for every posture to make it appropriate for all levels of flexibility, strength and experience. Some people choose to remain in the Mixed Level classes because they are intended to accomodate whatever you bring to the mat that day. If you'd like more information, please call or email.
